Transactional analysis is an approach that helps us describe, in clear language, what happens inside us and between us. Not so we can put a label on a person, but so we can notice: right now a strict voice is speaking in me; here I am reacting like a frightened child; and here I can pause, think calmly, and choose what to do next.

I work in the method of transactional analysis, and I often see how people feel some relief simply from having a map. Their experience stops feeling like one tangled knot. It becomes possible to distinguish different inner states, understand where they come from, and stop scolding oneself for every reaction.

The basic model is simple: we have three ego states — Parent, Adult, and Child. These are not diagnoses and not “three personalities” inside. They are different ways of feeling, thinking, and acting that come online in different situations.

What transactional analysis means in simple words

Transactional analysis, or TA, was created by psychiatrist Eric Berne. The word “transaction” means an exchange between people: I say something, you respond; I look at you in a certain way, you react; I stay silent, and that silence also communicates something. TA helps us notice these exchanges without blame or shame.

For example, a partner asks, “When will you be back?” In one situation, this may be a simple request for information. In another, the person hears control and answers sharply: “Don’t check up on me.” On the surface, the conversation is about time, but inside something larger has already been stirred: an experience of pressure, fear of being judged, a wish to protect one’s freedom.

In therapy, I may gently ask: “What happened inside you in that moment? Which part of you answered?” This is not an exam and not a search for who is guilty. It is a way to slow down and see the inner movement more clearly.

Parent: rules, care, and familiar voices

The Parent ego state holds what we once took in from significant adults and our environment: intonations, prohibitions, rules, ways of caring, habits of evaluating ourselves and others. The inner Parent can be supportive: “Eat something,” “You are allowed to rest,” “Think about safety.” And it can be critical: “Pull yourself together,” “You should be ashamed,” “Normal people cope.”

People often come to me with a very strong critical Parent. From the outside, they may look composed, responsible, successful. Inside, they live in constant tension, as if someone is standing nearby with a red pen and underlining every mistake.

At the same time, we need the Parent. A caring Parent helps us keep boundaries, eat on time, go to bed, pay bills, protect a child, and say to ourselves: “That is enough for today.” The task is not to get rid of the Parent, but to notice which Parent is active right now: caring, protective, critical, controlling, frightened.

Adult: contact with reality here and now

The Adult ego state is our capacity to look at a situation as clearly as possible. The Adult asks: “What is happening now?”, “What do I know for sure?”, “What options do I have?”, “What do I need and what does the other person need?”

Adult does not mean cold or emotionless. A healthy Adult can feel anger, sadness, tenderness, fear — and still remain in contact with the facts. For example: “I’m angry that my partner is late. I want to talk about it without attacking.” Or: “I feel anxious before the meeting, so I’ll prepare a few notes instead of replaying the worst-case scenario for an hour.”

In therapy, strengthening the Adult often begins with a pause. Not with suppressing emotions, but with a small space between impulse and action. In that pause, choice appears: do I really want to agree, or am I afraid of disappointing this person? Is there danger now, or does this situation remind me of something from the past? Do I need to answer immediately, or can I take time?

Child: feelings, needs, and old decisions

The Child ego state holds our alive feelings, bodily reactions, curiosity, play, creativity, desire for closeness, and fear of rejection. Old conclusions often remain there too, made at a time when we were small and depended on adults: “It is safer to stay quiet,” “Love has to be earned,” “If I need too much, I will be left.”

When the Child is free and supported, we can feel joy, ask, laugh, try new things, and experience the taste of life. When the Child is frightened or overly adapted, we may freeze, please others, hide, rebel sharply, or become very small inside. An adult person may be sitting in a work meeting, while their body is almost waiting to be scolded at the blackboard again.

In transactional analysis, this state is approached with care. The Child is not “childishness” to be ashamed of. Very often, both pain and energy live there. When a person begins to hear this part without contempt, the inner dialogue changes: not “what is wrong with me?”, but “something in me got frightened; how can I take care of it in an adult way?”

Why it helps to notice ego states

The model becomes useful in everyday life. In a conflict, the critical Parent of one person can instantly call out the adapted Child in another. A dry phrase from a manager may activate an old fear of punishment. A warm message from a friend may support the caring Parent and the free Child: “Here I can be myself.”

For self-observation, I sometimes offer clients a few gentle questions:

Which voice is speaking inside right now? Critical, caring, frightened, curious, calm?
How old do I feel in this situation? The answer is not always literal, but it can show whether an old experience has been activated.
What would my Adult notice? What are the facts, and where am I guessing or afraid?
What does my Child need right now? Support, rest, boundaries, permission to want?
Which Parent do I want to turn on? The one who shames, or the one who protects and supports?

This is not about constant self-control. Otherwise, we simply create another inner supervisor. It is more like recognizing a familiar melody. At first, you notice it after the conversation. Later — in the middle of it: “It seems I am answering from fear. I can slow down.”

How this works in therapy

In my practice, transactional analysis gives a map, but the map does not replace living contact. We can explore recurring relationship scenarios, inner criticism, difficulty saying “no,” shame, anxiety, or the feeling that life is moving in the same circle again and again. TA has the concept of a life script: early decisions and beliefs about oneself, others, and the world that continue to influence adult choices.

A client may say: “I always choose unavailable partners” or “I can only be successful when I am exhausted.” We do not rush to blame anyone. We look carefully: what did this way of being once protect? Which ego states take part in the repetition? What can the Adult see now that was impossible to see back then?

Therapy also offers something that is difficult to get from a book: a safe relationship where new transactions become possible. Instead of criticism — curiosity. Instead of pressure — respect for pace. Instead of “change faster” — a steady process in which different parts of a person can be heard. Frequently asked questions

Is transactional analysis only about communication?

No. Communication is an important part of TA, but not the only one. We also look at inner dialogue, life scripts, needs, boundaries, and the way a person treats themselves.

Can I use the ego-state model on my own?

Yes, as a tool for observation. You can notice when the critical Parent, Adult, or Child is active. If this observation brings up intense pain, panic, or shame, it is better to explore it with a therapist.

Should I always be in Adult?

No. Psychological health is not about living only from the Adult. We need a caring Parent, a clear Adult, and a lively Child. The question is whether they can cooperate.

A more caring way to understand yourself

For me, the value of transactional analysis is that it gives language to what many people already feel. We are not flat. We can be mature and frightened, caring and critical, playful and tense — sometimes all within one conversation. When we begin to notice ego states, more choice becomes possible.
